MYX needs your help. Please make a contribution to support our "Strokes of Strength & Hope: Friendship mural."
On March 23-25 2006, MYX participated in the National Service Learning Conference in Philadelphia. During the conference, we invited local and national youth attendees to participate in the painting of an original 12' x 12' canvas mural entitled "Strokes of Strength & Hope: A Youth Friendship Mural."
"Strokes of Strength & Hope: A Youth Friendship Mural" communicates symbols, poetry, images and positive messages about strength and hope for the future to students in Pascagoula, Mississippi, a community which was heavily affected by Hurricane Katrina. Specifically, this large-scale mural will be donated as a gift to Central Elementary School. The school is in the midst of restoring their facilities, and "Strokes of Strength & Hope" will be permanently installed in the main foyer.
MYX has received a donation of two airline tickets from Southwest Airlines which will enable us to personally deliver the mural to Central Elementary School on May 15, 2006. During our stay in Pascagoula, we will offer a free one-day, arts-based workshop to 85 students at Central Elementary School. Entitled "I am a Reflection of Strength & Hope," the workshop will allow students to create a collaborative assemblage that will reflect the themes presented in the mural. Each student will paint personal messages of hope, strength and friendship on individual wood mirrors; once completed, the mirrors will be permanently mounted in a tile format in Central Elementary School. This artwork will symbolize the students' inner strength and hope.
